SAN FRANCISCO — In 2017 and 2018, the Yankees featured two of the greatest bullpens in major league history: Only the Los Angeles Dodgers’ relief staff in 2003 produced a better Wins Above Replacement total, and those two Yankees bullpens posted the two highest strikeout rates in history, fanning about 11 batters per nine innings.
And somehow their bullpen looked even better on paper entering this season: Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances, Chad Green and Jonathan Holder were joined by a healthy Tommy Kahnle, a re-signed Zack Britton and the newcomer Adam Ottavino. Talk swirled that the Yankees might have compiled the best bullpen of all time, a collection of stars expected to pick up any slack left by a solid-but-not-spectacular starting rotation that emphasized the modern pitching strategy of quality over quantity.
A month into the Yankees’ 2019 season of high expectations, the reverse has been the case.
Entering Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Yankees’ rotation had a 3.52 earned run average, seventh-best in baseball. The bullpen, on the other hand, ranked 16th with a 4.45 E.R.A.
The starters’ strength has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees, thanks to the stout pitching of the newcomer James Paxton (3.10 E.R.A.) and the youngster Domingo German (1.75 E.R.A.). Back-to-back uneven starts this week from C.C. Sabathia (2.40 E.R.A.) and Masahiro Tanaka (3.60 E.R.A.) affected their major league ranking, but even J.A. Happ (5.96 E.R.A.) has been trending in the right direction after a slow start to the season.
And the Yankees’ rotation has accomplished this without a single pitch thrown by their ace, Luis Severino, who has been out since early March with rotator cuff inflammation in his throwing shoulder and the later discovery of a latissimus dorsi muscle strain.
“Going into it, I thought, as long as we stay healthy, rotation-wise we’d be O.K.,” said Larry Rothschild, the Yankees’ longtime pitching coach. “These guys are capable of stepping up, and German has been a real help in that way.”
For the underwhelming bullpen, the absence of Betances, a four-time All-Star relief pitcher who has been out since late spring training with inflammation in his throwing shoulder caused by a bone spur, hasn’t helped. But neither have the struggles of two key pieces: Holder (5.40 E.R.A.) and Green (16.43 E.R.A.).
Green’s year in particular has been stunningly poor. One of the pillars of their dominant bullpen the last two seasons, Green was demoted to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday to work on his mechanics and confidence away from the pressures of the big leagues.
“Frustrating, because I feel good,” Green, 27, said the night before his demotion. “Everybody goes through a point where they battle mechanics a little bit. We’re at a point where we have to fight through that and be able to perform and get guys out, and right now I’m not doing that.”
In the Yankees’ 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, Manager Aaron Boone brought in Green with a 7-1 lead. Green gave up two singles, issued a walk and served up a grand slam. He was promptly removed from the game.
That brought Green’s season total to four walks, four home runs and 14 runs allowed in seven and two-thirds innings. It was a shocking turnaround for a player who from 2017 to 2018 was second to only Craig Kimbrel in E.R.A., at 2.08 in nearly 143 innings as a relief pitcher.
A big culprit for Green’s regression: his fastball. Opponents went from hitting .121 against it in 2017 and .211 in 2018 to .435 this season, according to Brooks Baseball.
Although Boone initially said after Tuesday’s game that Green would work out his struggles in the major leagues, Yankees coaches and executives met and decided a stint in the minor leagues would be best for Green, who is under team control through at least the 2022 season. Rothschild said it was “really hard” to inform Green of the demotion because he was a respected teammate and had been such a valuable pitcher the previous two seasons.
“He’s not off by a lot, but he’s been off by enough that it’s had a huge effect,” Rothschild said. “If he corrects a few things mechanically and gets confidence rolling back, I think you’ll see him come here and pitch really well for us.”
The Yankees’ bullpen was built to be deep enough to withstand the occasional injury. But with Betances out potentially until June, Holder’s inconsistency and Green’s struggles are taking a toll. It has manifested itself the most on nights when Chapman is unavailable because of a heavy workload, and Britton moves from setup man to closer, thinning out the earlier innings.
Regardless, there have been enough steady or bright spots in the bullpen to warrant encouragement. Britton, Chapman and Ottavino all have E.R.A.s under 2.80. After a right shoulder injury and a drop in velocity undermined his 2018 season, Kahnle is in better shape, throwing harder and compiling a 1.93 E.R.A. The long man Luis Cessa has been a pleasant surprise with renewed confidence and a new two-seam fastball, and a 1.59 E.R.A.
Despite the inconsistencies in the bullpen, Boone said he was pleased by the stout work of certain relievers. Rothschild said it has been a challenge juggling rest and work for all the relief pitchers given the many moving parts. He believed it was a matter of time before the bullpen settled into a groove.
“We know that they’re capable of it and you’ve seen it, but it’s been inconsistent with everybody,” he said. “A few of them will get on a nice run and it’ll settle everything down.”B:
